The Quarter Finals of the Sigerson Cup take place this week, not that you would know it from the difficulty it takes to find out who is playing who with the lack of new information on the official website and no information on any GAA website. The way I did find out was from the Paddy Power odds.
The fixtures are as follows:
Wednesday February 13
DIT v NUI Maynooth
UCC v St Mary’s
Thursday February 14
DCU v UCD
Athlone IT v Cork IT
The Sigerson Cup is not promoted as well as it could be. Could these games not be played on weekend to allow for a greater attendance with proper promotion and a reshuffle of the fixtures as the National League is on in February too. Or if not could they not be played under lights in the evening and at least try and get the local population to attend as opposed to trying to get people to come out to games during the day. Athlone IT v Cork IT is an evening game to be fair but this is an exception.
There is a lot asked of young players at this time of year with college football and county or club commitments, especially county commitments as the National League is up and running and county managers a more likely to demand their players time than a club manager at this time of year.
On the competition itself the finals of the Sigerson Cup are hosted this year by Athlone IT who have one more round to overcome if they are to be involved in the Sigerson weekend on home ground. They take on Cork IT under the lights in Athlone.
There will definitely be representation from Dublin with the winners of defending champions DCU and UCD making it to Athlone.
There will be further guaranteed Leinster representation in the form of the winners of DIT and NUI Maynooth.
The other game sees UCC meet St Mary’s in an opposite ends of the country clash. This game takes place in Dublin.
