Interesting to read the two perspectives from somebody who has been involved in both GAA and AFL.
Despite Australia being some 10,000 miles from Ireland, I believe the actual game technique between Australian Rules & Gaelic Football isn’t all that far away. However there are some vast differences in other regards.
The early 90’s are my first memories of Australian Rules football. Saturday mornings spent with my Dad watching the powerful hits and amazing catches of the “rugby-type” ball on TG4’s highlights show. It seemed a strange sport that I thought must have stemmed from Gaelic Football; however, some Australian natives have since argued with me that the origins are the other way around.
From reports years ago I learned that the first game of Australian Rules football was played in 1858 between two Melbourne Secondary School teams. It was played near the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) in South Yarra, Melbourne – a place, of course, now famous for its love and passion of AFL football.
