Champions League Tuesday Quarter Finals First Legs

Bayern Munich v Juventus

This clash pits two of Europe’s heavyweights together.  Juventus overcame Celtic with ease, winning 3-0 in Glasgow and 2-0 in Turin.  Bayern were impressive in London when beating Arsenal 3-1 but were almost undone at home, losing to the Gunners 2-0 and going through on away goals.

Bayern Munich are favourites to advance to the semi finals.  They have lost two finals recently, in 2010 and 2012, and have all the pieces to be a Champions League winning side.  However, Juventus are no average side and are well equipped to beat the Germans.  Italians have a good record over Germans and it is worth noting that this has already been mentioned by staff at Bayern Munich since the draw.  Is this a psychological weakness that could hamper them?

It is a match up that sees two of the worlds best goal keepers face off against each other in Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer.  Bayern have some of the best players in the world at their disposal.  Robben and Ribery are a dangerous and exciting pair.  In Pirlo, Juventus have one of the best players in the world.

Juventus are capable of getting a result in Munich setting them up nicely for the return leg.

Verdict: Draw

Andrea Pirlo

Andrea Pirlo will be influential in how Juventus do in this tie.

PSG v Barcelona

Barcelona were on the brink of elimination after their first leg, 2-0 loss to AC Milan.  They overcame the Italians convincingly in the second leg winning 4-0.  That may be the closest they come to elimination as they bid to win another Champions League title, a 5th in their history.

PSG have a lot of financial backing, demonstrated in their outbidding of Manchester United for the signing of Lucas Moura.  They have the talented Zlatan Ibrahimovic who this sides revolves around.  Ibrahimovic had to play second fiddle to Lionel Messi during his time at the Nou Kamp and was none to pleased at their respective roles within Guardiola’s Barcelona, leaving in acrimonious circumstances.  This will add extra motivation for the Swede and some spice to the clash.  This tie may also feature David Beckham at some stage for PSG in a fairy tale return to the Champions League after finishing his MLS career at Los Angeles Galaxy.

Barcelona should have too much for the French outfit over two legs.  PSG have achieved a lot in reaching the quarter finals and the project there is on the right track.  But this Barcelona side may be the best of all time with the best player of all time in their ranks in Lionel Messi.  They will certainly score in Paris and may go back to Barcelona with a win.

Verdict: Away win

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi set a new La Liga record last weekend, scoring against every La Liga opponent consecutively.
