The final game of the NHL regular season took place yesterday when the Ottawa Senators defeated the Boston Bruins to clinch the seventh seed in the East while Boston finished up in fourth.
The match ups in the East are set and promise to be exciting.
The number 1 seed Pittsburgh Penguins will take on the New York Islanders who, like the Washington Capitals, struggled at the start of the season but finished strongly to clinch a playoff spot. Pittsburgh won the season series 4-1. Game 1 is on Wednesday.
The number 2 seed Montreal Canadiens will take on the Ottawa Senators in an all Canadian affair. The Habs have turned it around this season after a disastrous last place finish last year. The Sens have battled numerous losses of personnel to clinch a playoff spot. The season series was tied at 2 each. Game 1 is on Thursday.
The number 3 seed Washington Capitals will take on the New York Rangers. Both sides have finished the season strongly. Alex Ovechkin lead his team to the top of the South East, finishing the season as the league’s leading goal scorer. Game 1 is on Thursday.
The number 4 seed Boston Bruins will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. This is the Leafs first playoff appearance since 2004 so excitement will be fever pitch in the home of “Canada’s Team”. Both of these sides have limped through the end of the season since clinching playoff spots. Boston won the season series 3-1. Game 1 is on Wednesday.
