Italy and Japan played out a seven goal thriller in Recife as the Azzurri came out on top 4-3. Japan took a 2-0 lead with a penalty from Keisuke Honda and a fine strike from Manchester United’s Shinji Kagawa. Daniele de Rossi pulled on back for the Italians just before the break.
Italy scored two in two minutes early in the second half with an own goal from Atsuto Uchida followed by a Mario Ballotelli penalty. Shinki Okazki evened things up for the Japanese before the final goal, four minutes from time, from Sebastian Giovinco gave the Italians a lead they would not relinquish as they qualified from the group with a game to spare.
