This was a game that Barcelona could not afford to lose in order to remain in the title race.
Leo Messi was the star of the show with a hat-trick, two from the penalty spot. Andres Iniesta was the other Barcelona scorer, he opened the scoring in the game. Karim Benzeema scored the first two goals for the home side with World Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the third. Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was sent off for his challenge on Neymar mid way through the second half, a sending off that had a huge influence on proceedings.
The win for Barcelona means that they are now on 69 points, just one point behind Real and Atletico Madrid in what promises to be an exciting race to the finish.
